Advice for Parents

Self Harm Alumina | Selfharm

What is it?: Alumina groups are online support groups made up of up to 14 young people and 2 leaders, and meet online once a week for 7 weeks. They offer a friendly, inclusive, non-judgmental space where we offer you tools and ideas to help you reflect on your journey and what might be the next right step for you, as you move towards a life free from self-harm.

If your child is suffering from tendencies towards self harm, please help your child to register, and help them find the space in their week to join the group sessions.

As a parent/carer, you might benefit from accessing The NSHN Forum which supports and provides information for family and carers of individuals who self harm.

Recipes for wellbeing cards

CAMHS have created some ‘recipes for wellbeing’ cards, which aim to help parents and carers support a young person experiencing difficulties with their mental wellbeing. The cards give advice on: anxiety, low mood, bullying, sleep difficulties, exam stress, loss and bereavement, problematic gaming, crisis, body image, gender identity, sexuality, eating difficulties, panic attacks, transition to school and boosting self-esteem.

You can find them here: https://www.sussexcamhs.nhs.uk/resources/resources-for-families-carers-and-professionals/recipes-4-wellbeing

Talking regularly with your child about relationships and sex can help develop shared understanding, trust and support between you. Talk little. Talk often. Ask The Awkward: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/ask-the-awkward/
